Style Exercise

NOTATION

In a crowded restaurant, in the cultural capital of Europe, on a Friday afternoon. A young popinjay waiter, and a thick menu. I would like to eat a pizza, I ate one a long time ago. I have to wait a lot because the restaurant is full of unpatient, edacious people. The music is too loud but it’s not able to coerce the clatter of the people. I choose one after a bit hesitation. I’m watching the people until I get it. Finally, the waiter arrives with a huge plate and a pizza on it. It’s as delicious as I expected. But I'm afraid I won’t be able to eat the pizza. It’s too big to ingest!

SURPRISES

What a crowd! I didn’t want to go to this restaurant! And the spiral staircase was scary. The pizzeria wasn’t light inside, there was rather moodlighting. It made the winding stairs recondite. But I was eager to eat a pizza. I was sure it would be toothsome. So, I coped with the long waiting time. Not to mention the waiters. They were young fops. But imagine, they could twirl the trays. I thought they were amazing because I’m quite gawky. After a long hesitation, I chose a pizza. When I got it, I was surprised!
Fancy now! It was a folded up pizza! I looked forward to cutting it and see what was inside. You can’t imagine its flavour! Oh, it was full of smoked cheese, which I like very much. And there were mushrooms in it. Guess what! I ate it. The whole pizza!

DREAM

Everything was so muddy. I saw a lot of people, I heard voices but I couldn’t hear what they were talking about. Young people were wearing uniforms and walking up and down so fast, trays with their hands. They might be the waiters. Where was I? In a restaurant? Maybe. I felt good smell from a distance, it may come from the kitchen. The trapdoor was always moving, allowing the flavour to come to me. A man approached to me. He asked what I wanted to drink. But I couldn’t speak. I heard him but I couldn’t answer. I struggled with my thoughts. I ordered a peach juice. I love it and I always order a peach juice so I thought that would be good.
I saw a thing, a book. It might have been the menu. I started to turn the pages. I found the contents’ page, I chose the pizza chapter. I chose one with difficulty.
After half an hour, I saw the same guy came to me with a huge plate, but he didn’t arrive…

PRECISION

In a crowded restaurant which can be found at 17 King Street, Pécs, in the cultural capital of Europe. On a Friday afternoon, at half past 5. In the restaurant, there were 20 wooden tables, each one with 6 wooden, high-back chairs. On the tables 5 menus, 2 wine lists, salt, pepper and ketchup in small bottles. The restaurant was baded with 58 hungry, ready-to-eat guests. 6 eager-beaver waiters who wore uniforms: black T-shirts with the logo of the restaurant, black jeans and red aprons. 3 cooks, behind the counter, who made the pizza paste.
And the pizza! 30 cm long, 7 cm high on a white plate. The filling inside the pizza: 3 pieces of ham, 2 kind of cheese: mozzarella and smoked cheese, 4 mushrooms and the sauce. I had to wait 25 minutes for my pizza. I drank 3 dl peach juice that was chilled to 18 centigrade.
I spent one hour and 8 minutes there. I paid 1200 forints. I didn’t give a tip (I hardly ever give a tip).

HESITATION

I don’t really know where and when it happened…
Did it happened in the morning or at night? Was I at home, in the dorm or in a restaurant? I went to this place to eat something. Was I alone? Or was this girl me at all? I think yes. It was me who wanted to eat a pizza in a crowded place. It was full of people. Were they people? They could have been vax puppets or robots. No, it would be too abstract.
What did I eat? Was it a pizza? Because it might have been a quiche. I suppose it was a pizza. A pizza filled with something. But what was inside it? There must have been cheese- pizzas contain cheese. That’s right. But what else? Maybe eggs. No, I don’t like eggs too much, especially in a pizza. Then what else could be in the pizza? Ham, yes, finally I found out. Delicious, thin slices of ham. It makes the pizza really savoury. Did I pay for it? Or just leave without paying the bill? I don’t think so. I would never do it.
But I’m sure I didn’t give a tip. That’s as sure as fate.

cinemas

Nowadays going to the cinema isn't an everyday habit. And it has some good reasons.
One of them is the widespread downloading of films. Although it's illegal, almost everybody does it because it's cheap or free and fast and easy. You can download the films with the same time of their display. Moreover, their quality is impeccable.
The other reason is that the tickets are expensive. As a university student, I can't afford to buy a ticket for almost 1,000 forints. Furthermore, when I go to the cinema, I always want to buy coke and popcorn and this means extra costs for me.

However, watching a film in the movie house has a special athmosphere.
When the lights go out and you hear the different sounds around you which make you excited about the film. People are making noises around you which is not as annoying as at home. And the wide canvas gives the films another enjoyable feature. These remarks distinguishes the cinema-watching from home-watching.

Honestly, I like going to the cinema and watching films there. It has advantages and disadvantages, of course. But fortunately, there are cinemas who are cheaper than the big multiplexes and some of them organize the so-called movie weeks when you can watch films for a lower price. So, sometimes I can afford to watch movies, especially those which may have a peculiar scenery.
